Petition

Dear Rogers,

(jump to P.S. below for returning fans)

We are petitioning as passionate and loyal fans of the Toronto Blue Jays, a team that you own. We are also consumers of your Rogers services. Baseball fans know that this off-season brings about an opportunity where a team can sign an impact player to immediately improve the team’s competitiveness, and thus, its chances in the post-season. This player is Prince Fielder.

However, like any other open market, many teams can bid for Fielder’s services. More than likely, the team that offers him the best deal will win. While we are loyal fans of the Jays, and very likely will continue to support the Jays for years to come, our commitment is conditional when it comes to the accounts we own with Rogers.

We are ready and prepared to cancel our accounts, and bring our business elsewhere, if Rogers is unwilling to provide the Blue Jays necessary funds to sign Fielder. As Jays fans, we have not seen a meaningful Jays game in September since 1993. We remember what it was like to have hope in the team’s chances to win the pennant. The current Jays team has piqued our interest again with their heart and hustle, and us fans believe they are one impact player away from being annual contenders once again.

If Fielder is a Jay, we are ready to remain as Rogers customers, and will make sure we give the Jays the best home field advantage at SkyDome Rogers Centre. The choice is yours.

Sincerely,

Devoted Blue Jays Fans

(12/9) P.S.
In case there were any misinterpretations from our letter, let us make some clarifications:

  • this letter is directed to you, Rogers, not team GM or the team. With recent articles like this from Sportsnet’s Davidi, this from G&M’s Grange, and this from Toronto Star’s Griffin, we wonder if the GM is speaking code through the media to try to increase the roster budget. We are asking you, Rogers, to let the GM paint with a bigger canvas. We have confidence in him that it will be a masterpiece. This leads us to the next point.
  • most, if not all, fans are behind the team’s direction – rebuild farm system, acquire players with star potential for current roster, and build around established core players like Bautista, Lawrie and Romero. Many of us want Fielder to be a Jay, but if AA thinks signing Darvish or taking on salary to compensate for a better trade is a better investment, that works for us too. We are not trying to be a quarterback GM here by “forcing” him to sign player X, although Fielder would be great, too. :)
  • this petition has been open to many interpretations. From light-heartedness to intense scrutiny, the common denominator is that we fans want to see the post-season. Our interest is back again because of the GM, the players coming through the minors, and most of all, the players on the current team. Don’t take our patience and loyalty for granted. At his Hall of Fame ceremony at SkyDome, when Roberto Alomar said “let’s go!” to the team in hopes to rally them for a post-season run (which got one of the loudest cheers by the way), that line was aimed at you too, Rogers.

Cheers.
